Surgical Oncology Clinic

The Surgical Oncology Clinic provides comprehensive surgical treatment of oncologic diseases, preoperative and postoperative multidisciplinary board of doctors, and out-patient supervision in case of both frequently and rarely encountered tumours. The clinic consists of four departments – Department of Head and Neck Surgery, Department of Chest Surgery, Department of Abdominal and Soft Tissue Surgery, Department of Gynaecology.

The Surgical Oncology Clinic has been created on the basis of the surgery block of the In-patient Department “Latvian Oncology Centre”, which is practically the only place in Latvia that has been carrying out the most complex surgeries for oncology patients for several decades. The personnel of the in-patient department include 7 Doctors of Medical Science and 3 candidates for a doctor’s degree; post-diploma training of students, residents, and physicians is carried out as well. The scientific activity is reflected in international publications and reports at congresses, where the specialists of the hospital have gained international recognition.

In 2012, over 6 thousand surgical manipulations were carried out in the In-patient Department “Latvian Oncology Centre”. In the in-patient department, the activity of multidisciplinary boards of doctors is ensured and complex manipulations are carried out, including resections of the liver, pancreas, and oesophagus, extirpations of the uterus with para-aortic lymphadenectomies, as well as oncoplastic breast surgeries and complicated maxillofacial surgeries, using microvascular grafts.

Head of the Clinic – Dr. Med. Armands Sīviņš, Chief Physician – Dr. Viesturs Krūmiņš.

The department provides treatment to patients with morphologically proven or oncology-suspicious tumours in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, nose and paranasal cavities, ears, thyroid, salivary glands, soft and bone tissues of the face, soft tissues of the neck.

All Latvian inhabitants with suspected oncologic diseases receive consultations by highly qualified physicians of the department at the out-patients’ department of the hospital “Latvian Oncology Centre”. Every Friday, a board of physicians is organized to assess the optimum treatment tactics for every patient.

Patients are prepared for operative therapy as out-patients, and in most cases the surgery takes place on the next day following the admission to the department.

The scope of surgery is individual – from minimally invasive to extensive reconstructive surgeries. It depends on the size of a tumour, its spread directions, and general condition of a patient. The department closely cooperates with anaesthesiologists, radiologists, endocrinologists, microsurgeons, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, and other specialists in order to ensure highly qualified treatment for the patient.

Approximately 1,300-1,400 different surgeries are performed in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery per year.
