Latvian Centre of Infectious Diseases

The Latvian Centre of Infectious Diseases is the only specialized medical treatment institution in Latvia in the area of infections, where the patient can receive professional high-quality out-patient and clinical centre health care services for the treatment of infectious diseases (hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus, tick-borne infectious diseases, tropical diseases and travellers’ diseases, skin and sexually transmitted infections, parasitic diseases, also rare and resurgent infectious diseases).

Over a year, 7,000 patients undergo treatment and approximately 400 different infectious and “non-infectious” (oncological, haematological, skin, liver, etc.) diseases are diagnosed in the clinical centre.

In the Latvian Centre of Infectious Diseases, patients have access to the primary and confirmatory laboratory diagnostics of infectious diseases (including diagnostics of rare and dangerous infectious diseases), where the latest methodological and scientific recommendations are used in order to ensure the provision of cost-effective health care services compliant with international standards to the patients with infectious diseases. The laboratory of the Latvian Centre of Infectious Diseases Centre” has been included in the European network of BSL3/4 laboratories, and the functions of the laboratory have been expanded on an international level in the area of identification of potentially dangerous biological agents.

The clinical centre has decentralized structure in order to ensure epidemiological safety. There are 200 beds in the clinical centre.

The clinical centre is comprised of the Department of Emergency Medical Assistance and Patient Admission, Department of Intensive Care and Reanimation, and 7 specialized departments of infectious diseases:

  • Two HIV/AIDS Departments,
  • Department of Liver Diseases,
  • Department of Sexually Transmitted and Skin Diseases,
  • Department of Dangerous and Respiratory Infections,
  • Department of Intestinal Infections and Parasitic Diseases,
  • Department of Differential Diagnostics of Fever.
  • The specialized departments of infectious diseases of the clinical centre may be adjusted to any contagious infectious diseases, ensuring epidemiological safety.

The everyday work of clinical centre specialists is related to the readiness for emergency epidemiological situations and epidemics of contagious infections, thus strengthening safety feeling in the society in general. The specialists of the clinical centre participate in international cooperation programmes in the area of laboratory diagnostics of epidemiologically dangerous infectious diseases, ensuring cooperation with the World Health Organization, European Commission, European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, and public health institutions of other countries in the area of epidemiological supervision of infectious diseases, ensuring the maintenance and coordination of the Early Warning and Response System for infectious diseases of the European Union in the country. In the area of international cooperation, the specialists of the clinical centre have participated in the events organized by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and World Health Organization, as well as have prepared necessary information for the supervision of public health in the international context.

The clinical centre is an important base for preparation of young specialists – medical persons, students, residents in infectology and laboratory diagnostics of infectious diseases are trained here.

Patient admission hours of the clinical centre*:

Business days: from 16:00 to 19:00.

Sundays, Saturdays, public holidays: from 11:00 to 13:00; from 16:00 to 19:00.

* In case of quarantine and especially contagious diseases there may be limitations.
