Department of Head and Neck Surgery

The department provides treatment to patients with morphologically proven or oncology-suspicious tumours in the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, nose and lateral nasal cavities, ears, thyroid, salivary glands, soft and bone tissues of the face, soft tissues of the neck.

All Latvian inhabitants with suspected oncologic diseases receive consultations by highly qualified physicians of the department at the out-patients’ department of the hospital “Latvian Oncology Centre”. Every Friday, a board of physicians is organized to assess the optimum treatment tactics of every patient.

Patients are prepared for operative therapy as out-patients, and in most cases the surgery takes place on the next day following the admission to the department.

The scope of surgery is individual – from minimally invasive to extensive reconstructive surgeries. It depends on the size of a tumour, its spread directions, and general condition of a patient. The department closely cooperates with anaesthesiologists, radiologists, endocrinologists, microsurgeons, neurosurgeons, vascular surgeons, and other specialists in order for the patient to receive highly qualified treatment.

Approximately 1,300-1,400 different surgeries are performed in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery per year.
