Department of Diagnostic Radiology (Clinical Centre of Emergency Medicine „Gailezers”)

The following examinations are available to patients of the in-patient department and day patient facility, as well as out-patients:


  • Examination of the large bowel – irrogoscopy;
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography;
  • Defecography – functional examination of the rectum;
  • X-ray imaging of the stomach and duodenum;
  • X-ray imaging of the oesophagus;
  • Hysterosalpingography;
  • Fistulography.


  • Ultrasonography of the abdominal cavity;
  • Ultrasonography of the thyroid gland and epithelial bodies;
  • Ultrasonography of joints;
  • Ultrasonography of soft tissues;
  • Ultrasonography of the pleural cavity;
  • Gynaecological and obstetric ultrasonography;
  • Transrectal ultrasonography of the prostate;
  • Ultrasonography of testicles;
  • Anal 3D ultrasonography;
  • Ultrasonography of the perineum;
  • Ultrasonography of blood vessels;
  • Duplex ultrasonography of the abdominal aorta, incl. renal arteries, and leg veins.

Invasive US examinations:

  • Punctures of the thyroid gland, superficially localized structures, prostate gland, and organs of the abdominal cavity with subsequent cytological, histological, and morphological examination of the material obtained.

Computed tomography:

  • Computed tomography of the head;
  • Computed tomography of spinal vertebrae;
  • Computed tomography of the osteoarticular system;
  • Computed tomography of soft tissues of the neck;
  • Computed tomography of lungs and mediastinum;
  • Computed tomography of the larynx;
  • Computed tomography of the abdominal cavity and small pelvis;
  • CT angiography – for the thoracic and abdominal aorta, pelvic and leg arteries, lung arteries, arteries of the neck and head, kidney arteries;

Osteodensitometry (DXA).

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI):

  • for the brain and spinal cord, incl. functional examinations – spectroscopy, tractography, CSF circulation, etc.;
  • MRI of the spine;
  • MRI of the abdominal cavity;
  • MRI of bile ducts – cholangiopancreatography;
  • MRI of the small pelvis – gynaecological MRI and MRI of the prostate;
  • MRI of joints and soft tissues;
  • MRI angiography – arteries of the head and neck, venous angiography of the head, abdominal aorta, kidney arteries.

X-ray imaging, X-ray radioscopyX-ray radioscopy, computed tomography, and ultrasonography examinations require a referral from a general practitioner or a specialist.

MRI examinations require a referral from a specialist.

The specialists of the department participate in the training of students and residents of the Faculty of Medicine of Riga Stradiņš University in the field of radiology and training of radiologist’s assistants and radiographers of the University of Latvia. All employees participate in the sessions of the professional association and international congresses and workshops, and take active part in the work of the Latvian Association of Radiologists and associations of the relevant sub-specialities.
