Day In-patient Department of Internal Diseases

Riga East Clinical University Hospital offers a possibility of receiving the services of a day in-patient department in case of internal diseases – it is not an independent day in-patient department, but rather separate cots of the in-patient departments are used for day in-patients.

Services of the day in-patient department are available in three in-patient departments in case of internal diseases: “Biķernieki”, “Gaiļezers” and “Linezers”. Most often patients request for day in-patient treatment in rheumatology in the In-patient Department “Gaiļezers”, where 6 patients can be treated simultaneously. Services of the day in-patient department are available in the area of endocrinology, pulmonology, gastroenterology, cardiology, and nephorology as well.

Only patients capable of moving independently can undergo treatment in the day in-patient department, since they will have to go home in the afternoon.

Availability of day in-patient cots in the hospital provides patients with vast possibilities of undergoing additional examinations and receiving consultations by different specialists in case of unclear diagnosis.

When are services of the Day In-patient Department of Internal Diseases necessary?

To specify the diagnosis:

  • Unclear pain in joints in young persons, first disease of the joints;
  • Cough of unclear origin, continuous cough;
  • Shortness of breath of unclear origin;
  • Unclear pain in the heart area in young people;
  • Unclear pain in the stomach.

To treat diseases:

  • In the Day In-patient Department of Rheumatology:
  • rheumatoid arthritis;
  • ankylosing spondyloarthritis;
  • diseases of connective tissues.

In the Day In-patient Department of Pulmonology:

  • pleurisy of known aetiology;
  • exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease;
  • exacerbation of bronchial asthma.

In the Day In-patient Department of Cardiology:

  • arterial hypertension with hypertensive crisis;
  • serious complicated arterial hypertension for adjustment of the treatment scheme;
  • paroxysmal somatoform vegetative dysfunction;
  • heart rhythm disorders;
  • chronic heart failure.

In the Day In-patient Department of Endocrinology:

  • diabetes complications (polyneuropathy);
  • for patients with diabetes – planning of treatment with the elements of diet, insulin injections and physical load training;
  • for patients with diabetes – adjustment of insulin doses and obtaining of additional knowledge about the insulin injection technique;
  • sub-acute thyroiditis;
  • autoimmune orbitopathy.

To perform manipulations or to examine patients using intravenous sedation:

  • Fibre optic bronchoscopy with intravenous sedation, bronchial or transbronchial biopsy;
  • Transthoracic biopsy of the pleura and lungs;
  • Puncture of the pleural cavity;
  • Fibre optic colonoscopy with intravenous sedation and intestinal biopsy;
  • Puncture of the abdominal cavity;
  • Other invasive diagnostic manipulations, after which short-term observation of the patient is required;
  • Injection of specific biological medicinal products for patients with rheumatic diseases.


How to register for the day in-patient department?

Patients can receive treatment in the day in-patient department of rheumatology and day in-patient departments of other internal diseases, having obtained a referral by the relevant specialist.

During the out-patient consultation, the specialist assesses the need for a patient to be treated in the day in-patient department. In exceptional cases, the patient may be referred to the day in-patient department with a family doctor’s referral, having agreed the treatment with the specialist of the relevant day in-patient department in advance.

Working hours of the day in-patient department: on weekdays from 8.00 till 16.30.
