Clinic of Therapeutic Radiology and Medical Physics

The Clinic of Therapeutic Radiology and Medical Physics is the leading medical treatment facility in Latvia and the Baltic States in the field of radiation therapy. Due to the modern technical equipment and highly qualified specialists, all the latest methods of distance radiation therapy are used in treating patients.

In case of therapeutic radiology, patient treatment is carried out by using ionising radiation. Depending on the location of the source of ionising radiation in relation to patient’s body, radiation treatment can be arbitrarily divided into three big groups:

  • external radiation (distance radiation therapy), when the source of radiation is located at a certain distance from the patient;
  • internal radiation (brachytherapy), when the source of radiation is temporarily placed inside patient’s body;
  • therapeutic nuclear medicine, which uses active isotopes that are injected into patient’s organism in the form of radio-pharmaceutical substance.

During the distance radiation therapy and brachytherapy patients do not become radioactive, while in case of therapeutic nuclear medicine patients do become radioactive for a certain period.
