Centre for Laboratory Medicine

The Centre for Laboratory Medicine of Riga East Clinical University Hospital was created in 2009 by joining the clinical laboratory of the In-patient Department “Gaiļezers” and the unified clinical cytology laboratory of the In-patient Department “Latvian Oncology Centre”. The Centre for Laboratory Medicine is currently the largest laboratory institution of hospitals in Latvia.

The main aim of activity of the Centre for Laboratory Medicine is to provide in-patient departments, their structural units and all the commissioners of examinations – patients – with highly qualified and high quality laboratory testing services, as well as to ensure the fulfilment of tasks related to training, scientific research, further education, and other tasks in the field of laboratory medicine.

The Centre for Laboratory Medicine serves approximately 1,500 patients a day and ensures a wide range of examinations. 2.34 million of analyses were carried out in 2011.

The Centre for Laboratory Medicine has obtained termless conformity certificates, and all the preparation works have been done for the accreditation procedure according to the requirements of LVS EN ISO 15189:2007 standard.

The Centre for Laboratory Medicine is equipped with modern laboratory equipment, and its range constantly increases. All the analysers are linked to the information system of the laboratory, which ensures the rapid transmission of results to commissioners. Moreover, the information system of the laboratory is linked to the information system of the hospital “Doctors’ Office” (“Ārstu birojs”), wherewith all the results of laboratory examinations are available to physicians during the consultation.

If a patient is planning to receive consultations and undergo treatment with the specialists of Riga East Clinical University Hospital, we recommend performing laboratory examinations, including with a general practitioner’s referral, in the Centre for Laboratory Medicine! Thus, all the results of patient’s examinations will be immediately available to the doctor and will be safely stored together with other medical data of the patient.

The Centre for Laboratory Medicine comprises two rooms for medical procedures for taking blood samples – one in the Out-patient Division of the In-patient Department “Latvian Oncology Centre” and one in the In-patient Department “Gaiļezers”. Its working hours: on work days from 8:00 till 16:00.

Outside the working hours, laboratory tests are carried out by the personnel on duty – 2 laboratory doctors or laboratory specialists and 4 laboratory assistants.
